We get a lot of inquiries about vinyl wrap, and it's a great product. We install it. A lot of customers love it. But whenever someone calls asking about a colour change, we always make sure they know about colour PPF too (because most people haven't heard of it, and for some customers it's a much better fit).
This isn't about one being better than the other across the board. It's about knowing which one makes sense for how you drive and what you want out of it.
What is colour PPF?
Colour PPF is paint protection film that comes in a full range of colours and finishes instead of clear.
It works the same way as standard PPF. A thick urethane film goes over your paint, protecting it from rock chips, road debris, scratches, and UV damage. The difference is that it also changes how the car looks.
You get the colour change you want. And you keep the protection.
XPEL's colour PPF line is available in dozens of shades, including gloss, satin, and matte finishes. The colours are deep and vibrant. When it's installed properly, it looks like the car came from the factory that way.
Colour PPF vs vinyl wrap: the honest comparison
This is the question I get asked a lot, and the honest answer is: it depends on what you're looking for.
Here's how they actually compare.
Protection
Vinyl wrap does add a layer over your paint, so it'll take minor scuffs better than bare paint. But it's not engineered for impact. A rock chip will cut right through it. PPF is a much thicker urethane film built specifically to absorb that kind of road debris — roughly double the thickness of vinyl.
If you drive on highways, gravel roads, or through Ontario winters, that difference matters.
Self-healing
XPEL colour PPF is self-healing for light surface scratches — the kind you'd pick up from a car wash or light contact. Heat from the sun or a warm rinse causes the film to revert. It's not going to fix a deep scratch, but for everyday swirl marks and light scuffs it works well.
Vinyl wrap doesn't have this at all. Any scratch it picks up stays there.
Warranty
XPEL backs their colour PPF with a 10-year manufacturer warranty.
Vinyl wrap warranties are typically 3 to 5 years, and coverage is often limited.
When you're spending money to change the look of your vehicle, knowing it's backed for a decade makes a real difference.
Finish quality
This is where colour PPF surprises people.
The colour depth and vibrancy in XPEL's film is not what most people expect from a wrap product. Gloss finishes have a richness to them. Satin finishes have a clean, premium look. It holds up under sunlight without the fading you get with lower-end vinyl over time.
Removal and paint safety
Both products can be removed. But PPF is designed to come off cleanly without damaging the factory paint underneath. With vinyl wrap, especially if it's been on for years or applied over imperfect paint, removal can be more of a risk.
What colours and finishes are available?
XPEL's colour PPF comes in a wide selection. Current options include:
- Gloss finishes in classic and bold colours
- Satin finishes for a muted, high-end look
- Matte finishes for an aggressive, flat aesthetic
The lineup is updated regularly. If you have a specific colour in mind, reach out and we can check what's currently available and source samples.
Who is colour PPF for?
Colour PPF makes a lot of sense if any of these apply to you.
You want to change the look of your car and you drive it hard — highways, gravel roads, Ontario winters. You want the colour change to hold up and not show chips after one season.
You're protecting a higher-end vehicle and paint condition is a priority, not just aesthetics.
You want a long-term solution and don't want to think about replacing or touching up the film for years.
You want the factory paint underneath to stay in perfect condition for resale.
If you change up your look every couple of years and budget is the main factor, vinyl wrap might actually be the better call. We're happy to talk through both.
Can colour PPF be removed if I want to go back to my original paint?
Yes. Both colour PPF and vinyl wrap are removable, and when either product is installed and removed properly, your factory paint underneath stays intact.
It's a meaningful advantage over a respray either way — you're not committing to a permanent colour change. If your taste changes or you're selling the car, you can go back to stock.
What does colour PPF installation look like at The Guelph Detailing Co.?
Same process as our standard PPF installs.
We start with a full wash and decontamination. If the paint needs correction before the film goes on, we do that first. Then the film is cut and applied panel by panel, with clean edges and no lifting.
We use XPEL because we trust it and we've seen how it holds up. The installation is where a lot of shops cut corners. We don't.
Every car gets the same level of care regardless of what film is going on it.

Is colour PPF worth it over vinyl wrap?
Both are solid options. Vinyl wrap is more flexible if you like to switch up your look, and the upfront cost is lower. Colour PPF costs more but gives you chip protection, self-healing, and a 10-year warranty — it's a longer-term investment in the vehicle.
Most people who call us about vinyl wrap don't know colour PPF is an option. Once they understand the difference, some stick with vinyl and some go the PPF route. Either way, we want you making the call with the full picture.
