If you’ve been Googling ceramic coating, you’ve probably seen a lot of big claims.
“Permanent protection.”
“Never wash your car again.”
“Scratch-proof.”
Let’s slow that down a bit.
Ceramic coating is a great product. We install it all the time. But it’s important to understand what it actually does, and what it doesn’t.
What is ceramic coating?
Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that bonds to your vehicle’s clear coat and forms a protective layer on top of the paint.
When professionally installed, like XPEL Fusion Plus, it chemically bonds to the surface instead of just sitting on top like wax.
That bond is what gives it durability and long-term performance.
It doesn’t change the color of your vehicle. It doesn’t add thickness like paint protection film. What it does is add protection, gloss, and make maintenance easier.
What does ceramic coating actually do?
Here’s what ceramic coating is good at:
- Creating a hydrophobic surface so water beads and rolls off
- Making dirt, brake dust, and grime easier to remove
- Protecting against UV fading and oxidation
- Reducing the chance of chemical staining from bird droppings and bug splatter
- Enhancing gloss and depth in the paint
If you like a clean car, this is where ceramic coating shines. Washing becomes easier. Drying is faster. The vehicle stays cleaner between washes.
Now for what it doesn’t do.
Ceramic coating will not stop rock chips. It won’t prevent deep scratches. It’s not a replacement for PPF. If chip protection is your main concern, that’s a different conversation.
A lot of our customers actually combine PPF on the front end with ceramic coating over the rest of the vehicle.
When is the best time to get ceramic coating?
The best time is when the vehicle is new.
New paint is easier to prep and correct, which means you’re locking in a clean, fresh finish from day one.
That said, ceramic coating is still a great option for vehicles that are a few years old. We’ll perform proper paint correction first to remove swirl marks and light imperfections. Then the coating goes on top of that corrected surface.
Prep work is everything. If the paint isn’t properly cleaned and polished before coating, whatever is underneath gets sealed in.
Why we install XPEL Fusion Plus
We primarily install XPEL Fusion Plus because it’s consistent, durable, and performs the way it should.
It delivers strong water behavior and a clean gloss without looking artificial. It can be applied to paint, wheels, glass, and even over PPF. That flexibility helps when you’re building a full protection package.
We do have additional professional-grade coating options available, and we’ll walk you through them if you’re not sure what level of protection makes sense for you. Not everyone needs the same thing. It depends on how you drive, where you park, and how you maintain your vehicle.
Is ceramic coating worth it?
If you want easier maintenance and long-term gloss, yes.
If you’re expecting it to make your car invincible, no product can do that.
Ceramic coating is about protecting your finish from the everyday stuff and making ownership easier. Less scrubbing. Less staining. More consistent shine.
For a daily driver, truck, SUV, or performance car, it’s a solid way to keep your vehicle looking sharp without constantly reapplying wax.
